John William Godward (1861-1922)

Godward is yet another late 19th century neoclassical painter who was bulldozed aside with the coming of the modernist stampede of the early 20th century. At an exhibit of various paintings of this genre at the Getty Museum I asked some questions of the docent about Godward and she showed me the sum of the information available on him and his works (she claimed this was all that has ever been written about him) and it filled perhaps half a page. Unfortunately Godward committed suicide after being savaged by critics and reportedly left a note indicating something to the effect that the world was not big enough for him and a Picasso.
