Joseph-Desire Court (1797-1865)

Here's another new find from another little-known artist (to me at least). This particular painting was based on a popular serial novel by Eugene Sue called Les Mysteres de Paris.

Rigolette Seeks to Distract Herself During the Absence of Germain, Joseph-Desire Court, 1844

  • Well you have some good ibts on here but don't you ever want anything with a little edge? all of these pictures look the same in their own intracate well rendered, meticulious manner... Check out Giacometti's or frank Auerbauch's if you are inclined put up a post on it.

  • If by "edge" you mean ill-constructed and ugly, no, I have no desire to put that kin of thing on my site. Why would anyone? What's wrong with intricately rendered paintings? They look great don't they?

That issue aside, I disagree with your generalization. I have posted images which depart from that model quite significant;y. Did you see the Dewing paintings I posted a while back?

  • The painting of Rigolette by Joseph Desire Court can be found in the Musee des Beaux Arts in Rouen along with a couple of other equally charming works by the artist. My favourite work from Rouen however would be Alfred Agache's 'Enigma', a study of austere but striking beauty.
