A New Alma-Tadema Painting
I was reading through some books this weekend and I spotted a painting by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912), apparently long hidden in the private colelction of Henry W. Oliver. It's not in my own Alma-Tadema page nor (based on a quick look) on the ARC site either. Here it is...

I find this to be a good Alma Tadema, but not a great one. The composition is wonderful, but the figure of Hero bothers me...three things stand out...the wrap around the neck constricts the figure...another device such as a wrap blowing in the wind could have better conveyed that it was cold...also the awkward and poorly drawn arm and arm position of her right arm...it is uncomfortable and seems attached at a strange place....also the profile gives an expression that is neither pleasing nor very emotive...if the figure was good I would put it in the high ranks of Alma-Tadema.

I can't completely disagree, but even a minor Alma-Tadema is still pretty darned good, and I am always happy when I can find a new example of his work.
