Illustrators Galore!

For much of the 20th century, the banner of real art has been carried by people who I call artists, but some would call "mere illustrators". We recently had some conversation on the GoodArt Mailing List on that topic and I thought I would present some examples here to provide some concrete examples from the past 150 years for discussion. I have taken several contemporary examples that seem particularly interesting since some of them seem to be particularly reminiscient of fine art styles.

Unveiling The Statue of Liberty, Edward Moran, 1886

Once a Week, Frederick Sandys, 1862

Attack on a Galleon, Howard Pyle, 1905

The Nation Makers, Howard Pyle, 1906

Title Unknown, Sarah Stilwell Weber, 1906

Uncle Sam with Empty Treasury, James Montgomery Flagg, 1920

The Fencer, James Montgomery Flagg

The Smart Set, Guy Hoff, c1925

Target for Matrimony, Steve McNeil, 1952

Archangel, Donato Giancola, 1998

Savage Tales of Solomon Kane, Gary Gianni, 1998

Faust, Ray Largo, 1998

Nanuki: Lord of the Ice, Artist, 1999

Cartographer, Donato Giancola, 2001

Faramir at Osgiliath, Danto Giancola, 2002

Ashling, Tristan Elwell, 2002

Cymbeline, Kiunko Craft, 2002

  • Cymbeline? It's a play by Shakespeare, the lead is a King called Cymbeline. Who is the lady in the painting?
